Rossmann, which literally translates to horseman, uses a centaur as part of its logo. The company is headquartered in Burgwedel, close to Hannover and, as of 2024, operated 2.311 stores in its home country. This was an increase compared to the previous year. Outside of Germany the company opened many new stores across eastern Europe, reaching 2,655 stores in total. More than half of these opened in Poland. The company is yet to expand its operations outside of Europe.
Measured by revenue, Rossmann was the second-largest drug store chain in Germany in 2021. Its biggest competitor was the market leader dm (dm-drogerie markt GmbH + Co. KG) who achieved a revenue of 9.04 billion that year. The company from Karlsruhe generated a higher revenue despite having a smaller store footprint in the country than Rossmann. It was also the more consistently frequented drugstore between 2018 and 2021. The Müller Handels GmbH & Co. KG, with an even smaller store footprint generated an even higher revenue per store than both its competitors. It also had the highest reach per store operated.
