Press freedom index in Portugal 2013-2025
Portugal's press freedom index in 2021 was 10.11, an improvement when compared with the previous year when it was 11.83. The index presents an overview of the plurality and independence of the media and how safe and free it is for journalists to do their job, with lower scores indicating a better situation for the press and higher scores a worse one. From 2014 to 2021, Portugal's press freedom index decreased by 6.64 index points overall, suggesting that the situation for journalists got better during that period. However, in 2022, the press freedom index rose to 12.93, worsening in 2023, when it was 15.4, which indicates that the situation for journalists in Portugal has gotten worse recently. In 2024, the index decreased to 14.1, but, in 2025, increased to 15.74, the worst figure since 2017.
