The data for the source used for this graph is based on information from death
certificates filed in the 50 U.S. states and the District of
Columbia from 1999 to 2017, as collected and processed by the
National Center for Health Statistics through the Vital Statistics
Cooperative Program. Death certificates are generally
completed by funeral directors, attending physicians, medical
examiners, and coroners. For more information on the data please see page 8 of the NVSR report.
The death rate is per 100,000 population, where population data are enumerated as of April 1 for 2000 and 2010, and estimated as of July 1 for all other years
