In 2024, the number of wildfire outbreaks in Brazil's Legal Amazon area saw a year-over-year increase of approximately 51.8 percent. Just four years earlier, the Legal Amazon had recorded the highest number of occurrences reported since 2010.
The Legal Amazon area comprises nine Brazilian states in the Amazon basin: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, and Tocantins.
