
Female journalists' salary as a percentage of males salary in Sweden 2014-2023
In 2023, female journalists in Sweden earned 99 percent of their male colleagues’ salary. By contrast, the share was 94 percent as of 2014. That year, men in this profession earned on average 37 thousand Swedish kronor on a monthly basis, while women’s average wage amounted to only 35 thousand kronor. In 2018 the salary of male journalists was back at the same amount, whereas women’s salary had increased to about 36,700 Swedish kronor. By 2022, the cap between the salaries of male and female journalists reopened again compared to previous years, as male journalists earned a monthly salary of around 43.6 thousand kronor, whereas their female colleagues reached a monthly pay of 42.4 thousand kronor.

However, the number of women employed as journalists and related professionals in Sweden was higher than the number of men working in this field. As of 2022, the country recorded 4,600 female and 3,900 male journalists.
Which media are dominated by women?
Swedish female reporters especially dominate the audiovisual media market. In 2018, for example, 54 percent of television news reporters were women. By contrast, the share of women working for daily newspapers was only 40 percent. Regarding regional daily newspapers, the share of female reporters was even lower that year, amounting to 38 percent.
