Sweden's banking sector consisted of 124 banks at the end of 2023, with savings banks and commercial banks nearly equal in number at 44 and 42 respectively. Svenska Handelsbanken led the market in terms of total assets. The period from 2004 to 2023 saw a significant shift in the banking landscape: while savings banks declined in number, both commercial banks and foreign bank branches expanded their presence.
