Christmas trade in annual retail sales Germany 2023
Every year the German Christmas trade makes up a portion of sales in various retail industries. In 2023, the total share of Christmas sales in German retail was 18.5 percent. Meanwhile, when broken down by industry, the highest shares were visible among toys, ceramics and glassware, as well as books.

Online shopping obviously extends to buying Christmas gifts as well. Revenue from online Christmas season retail sales in Germany has remained stable in recent years. Germany also imports plenty of Christmas products, especially Christmas tree decorations. Among the leading supplying countries for the latter, China was Germany’s principal import partner, as well as the Netherlands in Europe. The most imported Christmas products were fresh Christmas trees along with christmas tree decorations.
Present budget
In Europe, the amount of money spent in retail at Christmas varied by country. On average, in the UK, consumers spent the most on Christmas presents, followed by Germany and France. In Germany, per capita spending on Christmas gifts amounted to around 533 euros in 2024.
