As of January 2021, over three million Italians lived in another European country. The largest part of them had been living abroad for more than ten years (some two million individuals).
In total, 5.7 million Italian people were reported living abroad in 2021. Most of the Italians who left the country came from the regions of Sicily, Lombardy, and Campania.
Data refer to the Italians reported in the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (A.I.R.E.).
