Since 2009, the share of nonfinancial company debt considered at risk in Germany has significantly declined, dropping from 38.61 percent to an estimated 15.62 percent in 2019. Over this period, a similar decline was recorded for Japan, decreasing from 30.57 percent to 10.36 percent. Conversely, in China, the share of at risk corporate debt increased, rising from 15.82 percent to 22.89 percent.
Debt at risk is defined by the source as debt belonging to firms with an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to interest ratio of less than one.
