In the school year 2018/2019, about 487 thousand students graduated from high school in Italy. More specifically, 150 thousand female students and 93 thousand male students graduated from lyceum. Among the different types of lyceums, scientific lyceum was the most popular upper secondary school in Italy. In this type of school, students focus mostly on natural sciences and mathematics.
In Italy, Lyceum includes several upper secondary schools which give preparation for university. It lasts five years, generally from 14 to 19 years old. In order to receive a diploma, all high school students need to pass a final exam, which is also a matriculation examination.
