In 2023, the eastern United States climate was, on average, the most abnormal across the North American country, with roughly 40 to 60 percent of the region having extreme climate conditions throughout the year. The Extreme Climate Index is an indicator of the percentage of land that experienced far from average conditions for a given time of the year, such as much warmer or colder daily maximum temperatures or much fewer days without rain.

Climate Extremes Index in the United States in 2024, by region
The U.S. Climate Extremes Index (CEI) is used to quantify observed changes in climate within the contiguous United States.
These figures are for all climate steps combined. It is the arithmetic average of the percentage of area with maximum or minimum temperatures well above or below average, the percentage of land in severe drought or severe moisture surplus, double the percentage of area with much greater than normal 1-day precipitation events, and the sum of the percentage of area with much greater number of days with or without precipitation.
