Since 2015 Romania has drastically increased not only the number of convictions at the European Court of Human Rights on prison conditions but also the amount of compensation that the Romanian government had to pay as a result of these convictions. Romania had to pay compensation as a result of ECtHR judgments, which amounted to a record high of 3.23 million euros in 2018. The amount paid in 2024 was 670 thousand euros, and the overall payments up to December 2024 were 16.7 million euros.
