Leading FMCG retail chains in Hungary 2017-2023, by revenue
In 2023, Lidl achieved a revenue of 3.6 billion euros, making it the largest retail chain in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry in Hungary. Its biggest competitor was Spar with a revenue of nearly 2.8 billion euros in the same year.
Grocery shopping in Hungary
According to the findings of a survey conducted in 2021, nearly half of Hungarian respondents stated that they used to shop two to three times a week before the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, during the first wave of the virus, over 50 percent of surveyed Hungarians went grocery shopping once a week. When it comes to the most affordable retail chain, Hungarian consumers perceived Lidl's price to be the lowest as of 2022.
Online grocery shopping in Hungary
Even though the e-commerce market is already established in Hungary, the trend of online grocery shopping is still on the rise with more and more retail chains providing with the possibility of online ordering and home delivery. A 2023 survey revealed that Hungarians were most likely to purchase groceries online when they were ill. At the same time, approximately a third of Hungarians would order groceries online when they were busy with other things.
