Costa Rica was considered the most sustainable country in Latin America in 2021, according to a ranking evaluating a series of indicators in selected countries in the region, with an index score of ****. Uruguay ranked second, with a score of ****, while Colombia trailed in third, with **** points. The ranking was compiled based on standard indicators within twelve categories, referring to data ranging from 2017 to 2020 (latest data available). The index score ranges from 0 to 100, where 100 represents the best performance within a category.
The ranking was compiled by AméricaEconomía based on standardized indicators with the latest figures available (from 2017 to 2020, depending on the indicator). Indicator values were retrieved from sources which include the Latin American Energy Organization, World Bank, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact, International Energy Agency, World Health Organization, OECD, and FAO-UN.
The ranking considers 12 dimensions, each with a respective weight on the final result. For each category, the country with the best indicator receives a score of 100, and the corresponding proportion score of the remaining countries is calculated.
