Number of operational domestic smart meters in Great Britain 2013-2024
Smart meter adoption in Great Britain has seen substantial growth over the past decade, with residential installations surpassing 30 million units by 2024. This significant increase reflects the government's commitment to modernizing energy infrastructure and empowering consumers with real-time usage data. The journey from less than half a million smart meters in 2013 to over 30 million in 2024 demonstrates a growing uptake of the electronic devices in British homes.
Deployment by large suppliers
Large electricity and gas suppliers have played a crucial role in the widespread implementation of smart meters. In the second quarter of 2024 alone, large energy suppliers installed 663,167 smart meters in residential homes in Great Britain. The larger share of meters installed were electricity meters, amounting to 367,188 compared to 295,979 smart gas meters installed during the same period.
Contribution of small suppliers
While large suppliers dominate the smart meter rollout, small energy providers have also made notable contributions. In 2023, installation of smart meters by small suppliers amounted to 24,971 smart electricity meters and 14,681 smart gas meters in residential buildings across Great Britain. However, the total number of smart meter installations by small suppliers decreased compared to previous years, with the peak occurring in 2015 when nearly 284,000 meters were installed. Despite this decline, small suppliers continue to play a role in advancing smart meter adoption throughout the country.
