In April 2020, during the coronavirus crisis, the Australian Hotels Association announced that 40,000 were stood down due to the coronavirus and associated lockdown measures in Australia. Alongside the hospitality industry, retail and travel companies were also forced to stand down large numbers of staff with Qantas standing down 20,000 employees and Myer group standing down 10,000.
