According to a survey by Rakuten Insight in January 2025, around 29 percent of Thai respondents stated that they preferred to play role-playing online games. Role-playing games or RPGs include subcategory genres such as multiplayer online role-playing games (MORPGs) and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). These types of RPGs are distinguished by their world-building and player size in a gaming server at a given time.
Popular PC online gaming titles
For online RPG games, well-known AAA titles such as Final Fantasy XIV, World of Warcraft, and Destiny 2 are Thailand's most popular online gaming titles. Character creation, world exploration, and cooperative gameplay are the core aspects of these MMORPGs. Furthermore, DOTA 2 has been a long-standing popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game for Thai online gamers in the past decade since it has an established eSports scene. High-earning eSports players in Thailand are mostly DOTA 2 players, earning almost 500 thousand U.S. dollars from their e-sports career.
Mobile gaming in Thailand
Most Thai video gamers used smartphones to play, compared to other devices such as PCs, tablets, and game consoles. Part of this phenomenon is heavily contributed to by the rising smartphone penetration rate in Thailand, making gaming on smartphones extremely pervasive. Large developers have also taken note of the prominent player base on smartphones, making it very profitable to extend their focus on developing and publishing game titles for mobile. For example, developers of Genshin Impact have made it possible to play on mobile devices, making it a global commercial success lately. Some popular smartphone online game titles in Thailand include Garena RoV, Garena Free Fire, Roblox, and PUBG mobile.

The survey was conducted among 4,687 female and 2,388 male respondents. Other surveyed countries included China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
