High rent or the current mortgage payment were the biggest obstacle delaying American homebuyers from saving for a down payment, a July 2024 survey among recent homebuyers found. About 12 percent of respondents found saving for a down payment was the most challenging part of the process, with over 37 percent pointing out childcare expenses as the leading reason. Moreover, the youngest group of homebuyers reported student loans as the biggest obstacles.
