As of end-April 2020, medical device companies throughout the United States were estimated to produce 7,000 ventilators per week. This is a tenfold production volume increase compared to the weekly average for the year 2019. The U.S. is the country hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic and demand for ventilators showed a massive increase due to the high number of patients in intensive care units.
