The value of trade and transport activities taking place on the ocean amounted to some 5.2 trillion U.S. dollars as of 2020. In comparison, the capacity of the oceans to absorb around 30 percent of the global carbon dioxide emissions was valued at 4.3 trillion U.S. dollars.
