Natural gas pipeline imports from Canada to the United States amounted to nearly 2.8 trillion cubic feet in 2021, up by over 11 percent from the previous year. This was a change of trend, considering that figures declined for three consecutive years previously. In the period of consideration, imports from Canada were continuously larger than pipeline imports from Mexico. Between 1998 and 2011, figures for Canada were greater than three trillion cubic feet and peaked at some 3.8 trillion cubic feet in 2002.
Imports from Mexico peaked in 1999, at some 54.5 billion cubic feet. In 2021, the United States imported 1.7 million cubic feet of natural gas from its Southern neighbor.
