In 2020, 46 percent of hedge fund managers who have used alternative data for at least five years invested more than 20 percent of their team's effort and time towards working with alternative data globally. Only eight percent of these hedge fund mangers said that their investment in alternative data was less than one percent.

Alternative data is used by investors to evaluate a company or investment that is not within their traditional data sources. For example, app usage or credit/debit card transactions fall under alternative data sources.
The source splits hedge fund manages into "market leaders" - defined as those managers that have been using alternative data for more than five years - and the "rest of the market", which includes managers that have been using alternative data for less than half a decade.
