Public electricity and heat production emissions in the European Union (EU-27) amounted to nearly 570 million metric tons of CO₂ in 2023. This represented a year-on-year reduction of 22 percent, and an overall reduction 54 percent relative to 1990 levels. Despite these significant reductions, public electricity and heat production remains one of the main sources of CO₂ emissions in the EU.
