The average area of land needed to produce 100 grams of protein varies dramatically by product. Red meats, for example, have a far greater land footprint plant-based proteins. Red meats such as lamb require more than 180 square meters of land per 100 grams of protein. In comparison, rice needs just 3.9 square meters of land per 100 grams of protein. The land needed to produce red meats such as lamb measures approximately 370 square meters per kilogram.
