For many decades, oil was the most polluting fossil fuel in Japan, with emissions from this fuel source peaking in the mid-1990s at more than 700 million metric tons. However, emissions from oil have been falling since then, and in 2017 were overtaken by coal emissions. In 2023, coal emissions in Japan totaled 394 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.
