A study conducted in December 2020 considered that poverty in Tunisia would increase after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Within a pessimistic scenario, where Tunisia's gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by **** percent, the share of the population living below the national poverty line would reach **** percent, compared to around ** percent before the pandemic. Moreover, the extreme poverty rate would also increase significantly from some ***** percent to nearly ** percent.
The source adds the following information:
- The first post-COVID-19 scenario (optimistic) "uses World Bank recent estimates with -8.8% real GDP growth, at constant factor prices."
- The second post-COVID-19 scenario (pessimistic) "simulates a
growth of -11.9%, i.e. the economy achieves the same growth as that achieved during the first half of the year."
