Unit sales of bestselling cars South Korea 2024
In 2024, the Kia Sorento was the bestselling car in South Korea, with over 94.5 thousand units sold. It was followed by the Kia Carnival, which recorded around 8.3 thousand units in sales. All the top-selling cars on this list were produced by Hyundai and Kia.
Hyundai Motor Group’s domestic success
Recent data revealed that Kia Motors and Hyundai Motor Company were the leading car manufacturers in South Korea, maintaining their domestic dominance in the automobile sector. Counting all three car manufacturers under Hyundai Motor Group, their combined market share of local car brands stood at over 91 percent as of 2024. Despite the dominance of local car manufacturers, the share of imported passenger cars in South Korea has steadily increased over the years, recording its highest share in 2022. The majority of imported cars came from German car manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
Worldwide contribution of the automobile industry
South Korea was among the top countries in worldwide passenger car production, ranking fifth worldwide. As the nation's premier carmaker, Hyundai Motor Company sells millions of cars outside of South Korea. In particular, North America is a major export market for Hyundai brand cars. However, not only the exports of domestically produced automobiles showed high figures. The overall output from overseas production across various countries account for a significant portion of the automaker’s total production numbers. India is especially seen as a growing market in both production and exports for the company.
