In the fiscal year 2020, the import volume of LNG from Brunei to Japan amounted to more than four million metric tons, the second lowest amount of the past two decades. Figures peaked in fiscal 2005, reaching almost 6.2 million metric tons, but indicated a downward trend in more recent years.
To be less dependent on fossil fuel imports, Japan is currently working on replacing fossil fuels with renewables and nuclear energy.
