The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic made it significantly more difficult for consumers in the United States to spend disposable income on travel, dining out, and other in-person experiences. Subsequently, many consumers turned their attention to other hobbies to fill the entertainment void. In 2021, the degree to which U.S. consumers collected physical items as a hobby or investment varied by gender. Men were the most likely to collect physical items, with 45 percent of respondents stating that this was the case. Meanwhile, 22 percent of women stated that they collected physical items.
