In 2021, hospitals across Europe employed various shares of nurses and midwives. In Austria, over half of hospital employees were either nurses or midwives. On the other hand, in the United Kingdom, nurses and midwives represented just 27 percent of the staff. The UK also has a low share of doctors as hospital employees among European countries.
