According to a survey of LGBTQ working adults in Australia in 2024, 65.4 percent of diverse sexuality employees who were not out about their sexual identity indicated feeling mentally well at work, compared to around 80 percent of employees who were out about their sexual identity.
Being out at work
For many in the LGBTQ+ community in Australia, being open about their personal sexual orientation at work can be challenging. Only around 40 percent of LGBTQ+ employees are open about their sexual orientation to everyone in their workplace, with just under 20 percent not open with anyone at work. Most of those who are out at work also report feelings of self confidence in the workplace, while those who are not out are less likely to feel self confident.
Negative experiences at work
Even with the growth of acceptance and inclusion regarding the LGBTQ+ community in Australia, there are still many instances of bullying behaviors in the workplace towards members of this community. Surprisingly, around three percent of LGBTQ+ employees in the Not-For-Profit/Charity/Non-Government sector in Australia have experienced negative behaviors, which saw the highest share of negative experiences out of all employment sectors. Trans and/or Gender diverse people of all ages were also more likely to experience negative behaviors at work compared those of diverse sexuality.
