Leading mobile app publishers India March 2023, by number of downloads

According to 42matters.com, Samsung R&D Institute India Noida was the leading mobile app publisher in India based on the number of downloads. This amounted to approximately over 2.3 billion downloads, as of March 2023. Samsung R&D Institute is the Indian branch of Samsung, the South Korean multinational electronics company, and has developed a total of nine apps.

Overview of mobile app downloads in India

Mobile apps have gained popularity over the past decade. Users downloaded various types of apps such as web apps, hybrid apps, and native apps. The number of mobile app downloads worldwide has surged considerably, amounting to more than 250 billion in 2022. India was among the leading contributors with approximately 29 billion app downloads that same year.

India’s booming payment system

Digital payment in India has been booming with user-friendly apps such as PhonePe and Paytm. Since the launch of the Digital India campaign, the number of payment app downloads has been rapidly growing. With the launch of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in 2016, India saw a significant increase in the number of finance app downloads a couple of years later. By 2022, PhonePe had become the leading payment app among Indian consumers with a usage share of 46 percent, followed by Google Pay, Paytm, and Amazon Pay.
