Fossil combustion from electric utilities in the United States emitted approximately 107,000 tons of particulate matter PM2.5 in 2023. PM2.5 emissions from U.S. electric utilities have fallen more than 80 percent since the year 2000. PM2.5 refers to atmospheric particulate matter that have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers. They are usually composed of acids, organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles, and are hazardous to human health.
