The carbon intensity of the U.S. power sector was 738 pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt hour of electricity (lb/CO₂/MWh) in 2024. This was a reduction of 47 percent when compared to 2005 levels. The state of West Virginia had the highest power sector carbon intensity in the U.S. in 2024.
