Within the Legal Amazon area in Brazil, the state of Mato Grosso was the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in 2022, generating over 400 million tons of CO₂ equivalent (MtCO₂e). The state of Pará followed, with some 363 MtCO₂e that year. The two states also registered the largest number of wildfire outbreaks in Brazil that year.

The 'Legal Amazon' is an area of more than five million square kilometers, which comprises the Brazilian states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, and Tocantins.
