Global agriculture emissions 1990-2022, by component
Net forest conversion has consistently been the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions on agricultural lands worldwide. Enteric fermentation is the second-largest source of emissions, with digestive processes from livestock having emitted roughly 2.9 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2022. While emissions from forest conversion saw an overall decrease of roughly 31 percent between 1990 and 2022, global enteric fermentation emissions increased by about 16 percent.
