Lignite production in the EU 2005-2023

Lignite is the most heavily mined form of coal in the European Union. In 2023, the EU produced 223.8 megatons of lignite. Lignite mining is roughly four times the size of hard coal production in the EU, which reached some 50 megatons in the same time period. Overall, coal production has decreased across the region over the past decade.
