Number of teachers in schools in South Africa 2024, by province and sector
As of 2024, the total number of teaching staff in ordinary schools in South Africa amounted to 459,993. Of those, the majority were educators in public education entities, at around 412,600. Moreover, KwaZulu-Natal had the largest number of teachers in public institutions, at over close to 91,000. Gauteng followed with over 76,400. By contrast, independent education teachers represented a share of around 11.5 percent of the cumulative number of teachers. Gauteng registered the highest count of educators in independent schools, with almost 21,700.
