China is the largest investor in foreign coal power projects worldwide. Public Chinese institutions have funded over 45 billion U.S. dollars worth of coal power projects abroad as of September 23, 2021. Neighboring countries Japan and South Korea were the second and third largest contributors to foreign coal power projects. The majority of funding went towards enterprises in South East Asia, with Vietnam and Indonesia the main recipients of foreign investments in coal power.
