As a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, restaurant staff across the United States were required to enforce certain safety protocols. However, not all customers complied with these protocols amiably. Between October and May of 2021, a gender-based survey in the U.S. was conducted to determine the share of restaurant workers who felt reluctant to enforce safety protocols for fear they would be tipped less. Roughly 62 of women and 56 percent of men stated that they felt reluctant to enforce safety protocols.
