The volume of passengers transported by railways in Hungary decreased overall during the observed period and peaked in 2005 at 9.9 billion passenger kilometers. A particularly sharp decrease was observed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, where the volume of railway passenger transportation decreased to 4.9 billion passenger kilometers by 2020. In 2022, the volume was 7.8 billion passenger kilometers, representing a 44 percent increase compared to the previous year.
