Number of foreign diplomats expelled from Russia 2010-2023

Russia expelled 34 foreign diplomats between January 1 and September 14, 2023. Over the past decade, the country expelled the highest number of diplomats in 2017, significantly reducing the number of employees at the U.S. embassy and consulates by 755 persons. The move was done in order to match the count of Russian diplomatic staff left to work in the U.S. after the latter expelled 35 Russian diplomats in December 2016. Most diplomats that have been expelled from Russia since 2000 were from the U.S.
