Coal combustion in India produced 2.03 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂) in 2023. This was an increase of about nine percent in comparison to the previous year, and the largest figure recorded during the period in consideration. Emissions from coal combustion in India are far higher than those produced by both gas and oil combustion. In fact, India is the second-largest producer of coal emissions worldwide, only behind China.
