Around 12 million people in Ghana had actively adhered to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as of 2019. Except the considerable drop in number observed in 2016 and 2017, membership to the Ghana NHIS increased from 2013 onwards. The NHIS was introduced by the government as a social intervention program that would provide residents of the country with financial access to quality healthcare.
