The leading cause of death in Peru in 2021 was COVID-19, causing almost 357 deaths per 100,000 people. Lower respiratory infections was the second major cause of death in the South American country that year, which amounted to approximately 58 deceases per 100,000 inhabitants. Moreover, with over 672 deaths per every 100,000 inhabitants, Peru recorded the highest mortality rate due to COVID-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean as of November 13, 2023.
