With a credit sales transaction value of about 22.9 trillion Japanese yen, general retail stores were the leading sales channel in the Japanese credit card industry in 2024, replacing department stores for the third consecutive time. The transaction value in department stores amounted to around 19.8 trillion yen. The highest growth could be observed for hospitals and clinics, with credit card transactions increasing by 22.7 percent.

The survey respondents are leading businesses and establishments that operate in the credit card service industry and generate high sales values covering about 70 percent of the yearly sales value of the industry in Japan.
