U.S. battery storage capacity additions 2017-2025
The United States is rapidly expanding its battery storage capacity, with plans to add 18.2 gigawatts by the end of 2025. This increase in storage capacity follows a trend of accelerating growth, as the country added approximately 10 gigawatts in 2024, up from 7.1 gigawatts in 2023. The surge in battery storage installations indicates the nation's commitment to enhancing grid reliability and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources.
Battery storage capacity in the United States
U.S. battery storage capacity is expected to total 28.8 gigawatts at the end of 2024. As of the second quarter of 2024, the country had already reached 23.8 gigawatts of installed battery capacity across its states, with California and Texas leading the way in deployment. A capacity of 45 gigawatts in battery projects is forecast by the end of 2025.
Global battery industry
The U.S. expansion is part of a broader global trend in battery storage development. Worldwide electricity generation capacity from battery storage is anticipated to reach 945 gigawatts by 2050, up from 52 gigawatts in 2022. As the industry continues to mature, global battery manufacturing capacity is expected to surpass seven terawatt-hours by 2030, with China, the U.S., and Germany leading the charge.
