Greenhouse gas emissions and targets in Germany 1990-2045

Germany cut GHG emissions by just over 600 MtCO₂ between 1990 and 2024, or roughly 48 percent. Germany aims to become greenhouse gas neutral by 2045. It has set the preliminary target of cutting emissions by 65 percent below 1990 levels by 2030, which would see emissions drop to roughly 438 MtCO₂e. Projections show that Germany is largely on tack to meet this target.

To limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and mitigate the worst impacts of climate change, global net human-caused emissions of CO₂ need to halve by 2030 and reach 'net zero' by 2050.
