In 2018, tobacco use was the leading attributable risk factor to the cancer burden in Australia. That year, over 189,000 disability adjusted life years, or DALYs, were attributed to tobacco use. DALYs are used to measure the burden of a disease, or years of healthy life lost, by combining years of life lost with years of life lived with disability. Other leading risk factors included being overweight or obese, alcohol use, diet-related risks, and high sun exposure.
