In 2018, tobacco use was the leading attributable risk factor to the cancer burden in Australia, particularly lung cancer at 122,178 disability adjusted life years. That year, over 189,000 disability adjusted life years, or DALYs, were attributed to tobacco use. DALYs are used to measure the burden of a disease, or years of healthy life lost, by combining years of life lost with years of life lived with disability.
